Bahrain authorities said work is in full swing on the world's largest eco-friendly underwater themepark coming up within the kingdom's master-planned island city, Diyar Al Muharraq, and is scheduled for opening in August.

The Bahrain Under Water Themepark will include several unique dive spots in addition to artificial coral reefs that will be submerged in the later stages of the project in order to form a safe haven for the kingdom’s marine ecosystem, said the officials of Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA).

On opening, it is set to become the largest diving park in the world covering an area of over 100,000-sq-m, they stated.

The park will boast exceptional dive experiences including several structures such as a submerged 70-m Boeing 747 as a centrepiece, as well as a replica of a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house and artificial coral reefs.

Sculptures will be fabricated from eco-friendly materials, and submerged to provide a safe haven for coral reef growth and a habitat for marine life, said the officials.

The dive site will also provide researchers with rich information and data on marine ecology and biology and will be a major boost to the kingdom’s ecotourism sector.

The project will help boost coral growth and the development of a sustainable habitat for marine-life to thrive, they added.

Lauding the project, Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani, said: "We are proud to launch this unique eco-friendly project in cooperation with the Supreme Council for Environment and the Private sector."

The project is being implemented in accordance with strict environmental standards and international best industry practices in the field of environmental sustainability; with an overall aim to revive the kingdom’s marine ecosystem and preserve its local marine environment, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
